STRATEGIES FOR ANGER MANAGEMENT

Anger is a core human emotion that is part of every one of us. Unfortunately many of us are taught that anger is bad and are not taught how to have positive affirming anger expression.

There are ways to develop an integrated and healthy sense of anger within oneself. These complement working on Anger Management with one of our Psychotherapists.

ANGER MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES INCLUDE:

  • Gym boxercise sessions
  • Yell and thrash underwater to express anger and rage safely
  • Punching bag striking sessions
  • Hit tennis racket against a bed or bed mattress
  • Martial arts style kicking and hitting out solitary practice with verbal “ha!!” expression
  • Visualisation practice of anger as red ball that you dissolve into nothing
  • Practice letting go and forgiveness
  • Get regular exercise
  • Adopt a Yoga and Meditation practice
  • Reduce caffeine and alcohol consumption
  • Hard grounding by leg stomping with verbal “ha!!” expression at same time
  • Mindfulness practice
  • Less aggressive TV, social media, internet and gaming device content
  • Abandon demands on Self and others for unreasonable performance
  • Give up absolute black and white thinking on issues
  • Practice creative and flexible adaptive brain gym activities
  • Count 1 to 10 before reacting to annoyance
  • Learn to practice active listening skills
  • Develop compassion by placing oneself in the shoes of others
  • Try to perceive others points of view as tolerable and acceptable
  • Avoid extremist views and rigid thinking habits
  • Develop a spiritual practice
  • Avoid rigid adherence to rules and the “must” and “must not” thinking
  • Relax and listen to soft music
