A male FIFO worker in his mid-40s sought counselling after experiencing persistent workplace bullying and exclusion on-site. Working a 1:1 roster in a remote mining camp, he described the work culture as “harsh and macho,” where emotional expression was ridiculed and vulnerability was perceived as weakness. Having entered the industry only a year earlier, he initially tried to fit in by adopting the group’s tough exterior. However, over time, the teasing and subtle exclusion escalated into direct hostility. He was mocked for not “drinking hard” and for keeping to himself after hours, which led to mounting feelings of humiliation, anxiety, and a growing dread about returning to work.
The client presented with anxiety, hypervigilance, disrupted sleep, and low self-esteem. He described feeling trapped, torn between the financial security of FIFO work and the emotional toll of the toxic environment. He also noticed increased irritability and emotional withdrawal during his home breaks.
In the early stages of therapy, we explored how the distress he was experiencing on-site was not solely about the present, but also resonated with earlier life experiences. As therapy deepened, it became clear that the bullying at work had reactivated unresolved childhood trauma. He revealed that as a child, he was frequently criticised and intimidated by his father, who used belittling and controlling behaviour to maintain dominance. These early experiences had shaped his belief that conflict was dangerous and that staying silent was the safest way to avoid harm. Recognising this connection allowed him to understand why he felt powerless in the face of workplace aggression and why avoidance had become his automatic response.
Counselling supported him in processing these old emotional wounds and distinguishing past patterns from present realities. As therapy progressed, we focused on building emotional resilience, self-worth, and assertive communication skills. Role-play and behavioural rehearsal helped him practice setting boundaries and managing confrontations in a firm, yet composed manner. Over time, he began to experience a stronger sense of agency and self-respect, which reduced the internalisation of the hostility directed at him.
Eventually, the situation at work reached a turning point when the main perpetrator escalated his bullying behaviour to the client. With increased confidence and support, the client formally filed a workplace complaint with HR. The offender was subsequently reassigned to another section, separate from the client. This action not only led to a significant reduction in bullying but also earned the client new respect from colleagues who had previously remained silent. He reported feeling proud of himself for standing his ground and described experiencing a renewed sense of identity, strength, and dignity.
By the end of therapy, the client demonstrated significant improvement in emotional regulation, self-confidence, and boundary-setting. He developed a deeper understanding of the systemic nature of workplace bullying and how toxic masculinity can perpetuate harm in FIFO environments. He learned that genuine strength lies not in aggression or silence, but in self-awareness, integrity, and emotional courage.
This case illustrates how FIFO Counselling can play a crucial role in helping workers navigate the emotional and psychological effects of bullying within hyper-masculine cultures. Through trauma-informed exploration, emotional processing, and empowerment strategies, counselling supported this client in rebuilding confidence, reclaiming self-respect, and cultivating resilience in a demanding FIFO environment.
