This case involves a young woman in her mid-20s who reached out for Online Counselling after starting her first teaching position in a remote part of the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. She had moved away from her family, previously her main support network, and found the isolation, the harshness of the landscape, and the demands of being a confident professional in a small community deeply confronting. Feelings of loneliness, pressure to perform, and the responsibility of “holding it all together” began to trigger increased anxiety and occasional panic attacks.

When she began Online Counselling with the Energetics Institute, sessions were conducted via secure video link, one of the telehealth modalities offered by the Institute alongside phone counselling. Because of the video format, her therapist could observe more than just her words. Subtle cues such as shifts in posture, facial tension, visible tightness in her shoulders, and changes in breath pattern, things which are easily missed if only voice communication is used. This visual feedback proved vital for guiding somatic and breath-based interventions tailored to her needs.

During sessions, the therapist guided her through mindful breathing and grounding exercises, helping her to notice when her body was reacting with fight/flight responses, such as shallow chest breathing, raised shoulders and clenched jaw. She was supported to slow down, bring attention to the present moment and her bodily sensations, and learn simple breathing patterns to calm her nervous system. Through Online Counselling, the therapist could provide real-time guidance, helping her adjust posture, deepen abdominal breathing, and release facial tension, making the exercises more precise and effective.

Outside of sessions, she was encouraged to integrate brief grounding practices into her daily routine, such as a few slow breaths before entering the classroom, a short pause when she felt emotional tension after difficult encounters, or checking in with her body at night. Over time, she learned to recognise early warning signs of rising anxiety and to use the tools she had been taught to diffuse the escalating stress before it turned into a panic attack.

Over the course of therapy, she described a growing sense of self-efficacy. When faced with difficult days, involving parent-teacher meetings, community expectations, or isolation after dark, she could pause, notice what was happening in her body and mind, and choose to respond rather than react. On one particularly charged morning, she recalled doing a short breathing exercise before school. Instead of spiralling into panic at the thought of the day ahead, she entered the classroom with a calm centre and navigated the day with composure. Afterwards, she felt proud of herself for reclaiming agency over her nervous system rather than being overwhelmed by it.

By the end of her Online Counselling period, she reported having lesser anxiety, fewer panic episodes, greater emotional regulation, and a stronger sense of resilience living and working in a remote town. She said she felt more connected to her inner resources, more grounded in her body, and more able to face the uncertainties of her teaching role without succumbing to anxiety.

This case demonstrates how Online Counselling via video can successfully replicate key elements of face-to-face therapy, by combining visual observation, guided breathing, body awareness, and ongoing therapeutic support. Some clients in remote or isolated areas can receive effective, personalised care without needing to be physically present in a physical room with a therapist.
