This case involves a woman in her late 50s who wanted Life Coaching as she had recently left a long-term role in occupational health and safety to pursue independent consultancy work. After many years of structured employment, she wanted to work part-time, diversify her skills, and design her professional life around flexibility rather than reporting to a boss. She had enrolled in a Certificate IV in Management to broaden her expertise and support her transition to consultancy. In addition, she hoped to complete personal projects at home, including designing and implementing a landscaped garden, which had been on hold for years.
This life transition was significant for several reasons. It marked the first time in her adult life that she would not have a guaranteed salary and would be financially dependent, at least in part, on her husband, who worked full-time. This raised concerns about self-worth, identity, and confidence, as her professional role had long been a source of personal validation. She also wanted structure and practical strategies to manage her time effectively, balancing study, consultancy work, home projects, and personal wellbeing.
The coaching process began by clarifying values and priorities. Through reflective exercises, she explored what success meant to her at this stage of life, both professionally and personally. She identified key goals, such as, building a sustainable consultancy practice, completing her home garden project, maintaining financial independence where possible, and fostering a sense of autonomy and self-efficacy. This clarity helped shape the structure of her coaching plan.
Practical strategies were introduced to manage the transition. Time-blocking and goal-setting exercises were used to balance her consultancy work, study commitments, and home projects. Each week, she created a schedule with dedicated periods for client work, learning modules, and garden implementation tasks, ensuring that her energy was allocated realistically across multiple responsibilities. A priority matrix was also employed to distinguish between urgent versus important tasks, helping her focus on high-impact activities without becoming overwhelmed.
Parallel to practical planning, we explored underlying psychological factors. She acknowledged anxieties about losing professional identity and self-worth, as well as fears about dependency on her husband for financial support. Life Coaching exercises focused on reframing these concerns as opportunities for growth, emphasising that independence and self-efficacy could be expressed in multiple ways beyond traditional employment. Techniques such as guided visualisation, journaling, and reflective dialogue helped her connect with her strengths, past achievements, and ability to navigate change successfully.
Accountability structures supported sustained progress. She reported weekly achievements, identified obstacles, and celebrated incremental milestones, both in her consultancy work and home projects. We also used behavioural experiments, such as dedicating a full morning to consultancy tasks without distraction, or testing new landscaping approaches in the garden, which helped build confidence in decision-making and self-direction. Over several months, she successfully balanced study, consultancy tasks, and garden work, while feeling more comfortable with the notion of shared financial responsibility.
This case demonstrates how Life Coaching can effectively support major life transitions by combining practical planning, goal-setting, time management, and reflective exercises to foster self-efficacy, confidence, and balance. It highlights the importance of personalised strategies to navigate change, build structure, and integrate personal and professional goals during periods of significant life adjustment.
