This case involves a 40-year-old female executive working in a senior leadership role within one of Australia’s major banks. Although widely regarded as competent, reliable, and strategically strong, she sought career counselling because of persistent imposter syndrome that was eroding her confidence and wellbeing. Working in a predominantly male environment, she felt pressure to constantly outperform and feared that any misstep would expose her as inadequate. Despite a strong track record, she struggled to internalise her success and often dismissed her achievements as good luck, favourable timing, or external support rather than her own capability.
As we explored the roots of her internal narrative, she recognised echoes of her upbringing. She came from a family that valued achievement but offered little emotional validation. Approval was conditional, praise was rare, and mistakes were met with criticism. From a young age she internalised a belief that she had to continually prove her worth, setting the stage for the adult pattern of striving paired with chronic self-doubt. These deeper insights formed the psychotherapeutic component of the work, helping her understand why professional environments triggered such strong emotional reactions.
The coaching process began with practical tools to anchor her in reality rather than self-perception. We conducted a structured strengths audit, performance analysis, and 360-degree feedback review. Seeing written evidence of her capability helped interrupt the ingrained belief that she was “faking it.” We then worked on executive presence, focusing on communication clarity, strategic influence, and leadership confidence. These skills allowed her to show up more powerfully in meetings without falling into overexplaining, overpreparing, or playing small.
Parallel to this, we incorporated mindset and emotional-regulation work. She learned to recognise the internal critic that echoed old childhood messages and to differentiate it from her adult professional voice. We explored how her body responded under pressure, tight chest, shallow breathing, tension in the throat, and used grounding and centring strategies to help her stay present and composed during high-stakes conversations. This blend of cognitive and somatic awareness helped her shift from reactive fear to a more grounded sense of authority.
A significant part of the process involved behavioural experiments. She practised speaking earlier in meetings, contributing ideas without rehearsing them mentally, and delegating tasks she had previously hoarded due to a fear of being judged. Role plays allowed her to rehearse difficult conversations with male peers or superiors, building confidence in her ability to hold her ground. Over time, she began to trust her competency rather than question it.
By the end of her Career Counselling, she reported feeling significantly more aligned with her role and capable of managing the pressures of corporate leadership. She established healthier work boundaries, reduced perfectionistic behaviours, and felt more confident expressing her ideas without fear of being dismissed. Her imposter syndrome no longer dominated her internal world and while remnants remained, they no longer dictated her decisions. Her colleagues also began responding differently, as she was treated with more respect and listened to more attentively as her leadership presence strengthened.
This case demonstrates how integrating Career Counselling, coaching strategies, and light psychotherapeutic insight can effectively shift long-standing self-doubt, particularly for women leading in male-dominated environments. It highlights the power of combining practical skills, embodied confidence, and internal narrative transformation to support meaningful professional growth.
