This case involves a married man in his early 40s who works on a FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) roster and sought Life Coaching to address ongoing procrastination and difficulties maintaining productivity on his home swings. While highly competent in his onsite work life, he found it challenging to manage personal responsibilities at home, particularly small renovations and maintenance tasks. This pattern had begun to create tension with his wife, who was increasingly frustrated and resentful over unmet expectations, creating strain in the relationship.

From the outset, it was clear that his procrastination was not due to a lack of motivation or skill but was influenced by fatigue, overwhelm, and difficulty structuring his time effectively during home swings. He admitted that he often felt paralysed by the sheer number of tasks awaiting him, and instead of taking small, manageable steps, he would defer work until the pressure felt unbearable. This avoidance, compounded by a sense of guilt and self-criticism, perpetuated a cycle of inaction.

The coaching process began with practical tools for prioritisation and task management. Together, we conducted a structured review of his home projects, breaking them into small, actionable steps and creating realistic timelines for completion. Techniques such as the “two-minute rule”, starting any task that could be completed in two minutes immediately, were introduced to create momentum and counter avoidance. We also applied principles of time-blocking, designating specific periods during his home swing for focused work on renovations, balanced with personal self-care and family time.

Parallel to these practical strategies, we explored underlying psychological patterns contributing to procrastination. He reflected on long-standing tendencies to avoid tasks that might expose imperfection, echoing early family messages about needing to “get it right” or risk criticism. Through awareness and reflective exercises, he began to differentiate between constructive planning and paralysing self-doubt, recognising when fear or perfectionism was driving his delay.

Accountability structures were integrated to reinforce behavioural change. He shared his weekly goals with his wife and the coach, not as a source of pressure but as a framework for support and mutual understanding. Daily check-ins, brief reflection logs, and celebrating small wins helped him maintain motivation and track progress. Mindfulness and grounding techniques were also incorporated to manage stress and increase presence, preventing avoidance from being triggered by fatigue or overwhelm.

Over several home swings, he reported noticeable improvements. Tasks that had previously felt overwhelming were completed in a structured, consistent manner, reducing tension with his wife and improving household functioning. He also gained greater confidence in his ability to manage competing responsibilities, recognising that incremental action and deliberate planning were more effective than attempting to tackle everything at once. Importantly, he began to experience less internal criticism, feeling more in control and capable rather than guilty or frustrated.

By the end of the coaching period, he had established productive routines for managing home projects, integrated self-care into his weekly schedule, and strengthened communication with his wife about shared responsibilities. The combination of practical productivity strategies, insight into underlying psychological patterns, and supportive accountability mechanisms empowered him to overcome procrastination and build sustainable habits.

This case demonstrates how Life Coaching can help clients address procrastination by blending actionable strategies, behavioural experiments, and reflective awareness. It highlights the value of structuring tasks, managing overwhelm, and fostering self-efficacy to support personal growth, improved relationships, and enhanced wellbeing.
