This case involves a 25-year-old woman who sought career counselling after experiencing prolonged workplace bullying as an administrative assistant in a mid-sized corporate office. She had been performing her role competently for over a year when a new female employee was hired. Initially, the newcomer shared some responsibilities, but over time, subtle undermining behaviours began. The client noticed that her work contributions were being minimized, ideas subtly dismissed, and credit for her achievements occasionally redirected. Eventually, the situation escalated to character assassination from the colleague, with colleagues being misinformed about her performance and reliability.
The client reported feeling anxious, demoralised, and increasingly insecure about her professional abilities. Despite being diligent and capable, she began doubting herself and avoided contributing ideas in meetings. She described feeling “trapped” in a toxic dynamic, fearful of confrontation, and unsure how to protect her career without creating conflict. Her confidence was shaken, and she experienced sleepless nights, stress headaches, and a persistent sense of hypervigilance at work.
In early sessions, we explored the emotional impact of passive-aggressive and narcissistic bullying. The client recognised patterns from earlier experiences where she had felt overlooked or dismissed, which made her particularly sensitive to being undermined. We briefly used psychotherapy-informed techniques to process feelings of anxiety, self-doubt, and anger, helping her separate her self-worth from the negative behaviours of her colleague. This emotional processing created the foundation for practical career-focused strategies.
Once she had greater clarity about her own strengths and resilience, we developed an action plan to address the workplace situation constructively. Together, we explored options for managing conflict with minimal personal risk. Given her colleague’s manipulative tendencies, we agreed that directly confronting the bully would not be effective. Instead, the client prepared a detailed, factual account of incidents and their impact on her work, which she presented to management. We practised framing her communication assertively but professionally, highlighting objective outcomes rather than subjective criticisms.
Management responded positively, acknowledging the issues and taking measures to protect her role. The colleague was moved to a different workspace and eventually reassigned to another department, effectively ending the bullying. The client reported feeling validated and supported, which had an immediate positive effect on her self-esteem and confidence at work.
Post-resolution, the Career Counselling focused on rebuilding her professional self-assurance and preventing future vulnerability to similar situations. We worked on boundary-setting skills and assertive communication. We also explored career development opportunities, encouraging her to take on projects that highlighted her strengths and allowed her to rebuild her reputation.
By the conclusion of counselling, she reported feeling more confident, assertive, and resilient. She no longer internalized the negative behaviours of others and had practical strategies to manage interpersonal challenges. Her professional relationships improved, and she was able to re-engage with her work with energy and purpose.
This case illustrates how Career Counselling can combine practical workplace strategies, assertiveness training, and psychotherapy-informed emotional support to help clients navigate bullying, rebuild confidence, and restore professional self-esteem. With the right approach, even difficult workplace dynamics can be transformed into opportunities for growth, empowerment, and positive outcomes.
