This case involves a man in his early 50s who sought Life Coaching following a significant financial and professional setback. He had previously owned a successful mortgage lending firm, which he sold to free capital for what he believed was a secure investment opportunity. Confident in the prospects, he invested a substantial portion of his savings. However, the investment was with a non-public company, and the individuals raising the capital absconded with the funds, leaving him and other investors with massive financial losses.
This sudden crisis affected both his professional identity and personal confidence. He felt that his judgment had failed him, and he began doubting his skills, experience, and decision-making ability. To regain financial stability, he returned to a previous employer who valued his expertise, integrity, and work ethic. While this role provided necessary income, he initially perceived it as a backward step, creating tension between financial necessity and pride.
The Life Coaching process began with acknowledging the emotional impact of the crisis. Through reflective exercises and guided dialogue, he explored feelings of disappointment, self-doubt, and loss of professional identity. Normalising these reactions helped him move past self-blame and focus on constructive strategies for rebuilding confidence and regaining a sense of agency.
Practical life skills techniques were introduced to support recovery and forward momentum. Goal-setting exercises helped him create a clear, realistic plan for financial recovery, career development, and personal growth. Time-blocking and task prioritisation strategies allowed him to regain structure, ensuring that daily work, skill refreshment, and family responsibilities were managed effectively. To rebuild self-efficacy, he maintained a “success log,” recording achievements, positive feedback, and examples of problem-solving, which counteracted persistent self-criticism and reminded him of his capabilities.
Life Coaching exercises explored his past successes, emphasising patterns of integrity, diligence, and resilience that had contributed to his achievements. These reflections helped him recognise transferable skills and reignited confidence in his professional judgment.
Behavioural experiments were also employed to restore action-based confidence. He took on challenging tasks at work that stretched his skills, including mentoring junior colleagues, leading complex client negotiations, and volunteering for initiatives outside his comfort zone. These incremental successes reinforced his self-belief and reminded him of his professional value. Mindfulness exercises were occasionally integrated to manage anxiety, stress, and the physical tension associated with uncertainty, ensuring he remained grounded and present during critical tasks.
Over the course of the Life Coaching, he reported a gradual restoration of confidence and agency. He no longer viewed returning to his old employer as a failure but as an opportunity to rebuild a foundation for future ventures. His sense of competence and judgment returned, alongside a renewed awareness of his personal strengths, resilience, and adaptability.
This case illustrates how Life Coaching can support individuals navigating personal or professional crises by combining reflective insight, practical strategies, mindset reframing, and incremental behavioural experiments. It demonstrates that, even after significant setbacks, clients can rebuild trust in their own judgment, rediscover their strengths, and approach the next chapter of life with renewed confidence and clarity.
