This case relates to a woman in her mid-20s who sought Bioenergetics to address persistent feelings of shame, self-criticism, and emotional inhibition. Although competent, warm, and well-regarded in her workplace, she carried a deep internal sense of “not being good enough.” She described constantly monitoring how others perceived her, second-guessing her words, and feeling exposed or “too much” when attention was directed her way. Social interactions, dating, and even receiving praise triggered waves of embarrassment and self-contraction.

Early exploration revealed a childhood marked by chronic criticism and perfectionistic expectations. She grew up in a family where mistakes were highlighted, emotional expressions were dismissed as “overreacting,” and achievement was treated as the only safe route to approval. When she cried, she was told she was “silly” or “dramatic,” and when she succeeded, she was told she “could have done better.” Over time, she learned to hold her breath, stay quiet, and keep her feelings tightly contained. This created a pattern of shrinking inward, masking vulnerability, and carrying a constant internal belief that she was somehow flawed.

These psychological patterns were vividly expressed in her body. She had restricted upper-chest breathing, collapsed shoulders, a tight diaphragm, and a tendency to hold her belly in to appear contained. Her voice was soft, her movements small and tentative, and she often apologised before speaking. When discussing shame, her throat tightened, her eyes dropped, and her body folded forward in a classic bioenergetic posture of self-protection and inhibition.

The Bioenergetics Therapy began by helping her build safety in her body through grounding, breath awareness, and gentle mobilisation of her chest and diaphragm. She initially struggled to take a full breath, explaining that deeper breaths made her feel “too visible.” Using simple embodied exercises, she gradually became more aware of how she held herself back, physically and emotionally.

As our therapeutic relationship deepened, we introduced movement and expressive work designed to access the shame-based contractions held in her diaphragm, throat, and chest. Breathwork helped expand her ribcage and soften the chronic holding patterns that kept her small. Using supported postures and safe vocal expression, she made tentative sounds that gradually grew stronger. These moments often brought tears, which were linked to years of swallowing emotion to avoid judgement or criticism.

Through carefully paced experiential enactments, she began to contact the young part of herself who internalised the message that she was “too much” or “not enough.” As she expressed the sadness, anger, and longing stored in her body, her posture slowly lifted. She experienced moments of genuine release, trembling in her legs, spontaneous sighs, waves of warmth through her chest, as her body discharged long-held tension.

Over time, her voice became clearer and more confident. She reported feeling less self-conscious in social situations and more able to express her needs without immediately assuming she was imposing or embarrassing herself. Even her friends noticed she seemed “more present,” “more alive,” and “more herself.”

This case illustrates how Bioenergetic Analysis can help clients dissolve shame by releasing chronic muscular contractions, expanding breath, and giving voice to previously silenced parts of themselves. Through breath, movement, and embodied expression, clients develop a stronger, more coherent sense of self and reclaim the vitality that shame once suppressed. As the body opens, so too does the personality, allowing for greater spontaneity, authenticity, and emotional freedom in daily life.
