This case involves a woman in her early 40s who sought Grief Counselling after the unexpected death of her long-term partner. The loss was sudden and traumatic, leaving her overwhelmed by shock, disbelief, and a profound sense of emptiness. Although she continued to manage the practical aspects of daily life, she described feeling “disconnected from everything,” moving through her days in a fog. She struggled with sleep, experienced waves of panic, and found herself alternating between emotional numbness and intense surges of grief.

In early sessions, she shared that her partner had been her primary source of emotional support and stability. Their relationship had provided her with a sense of safety and grounding, and the suddenness of the loss shattered that foundation. She spoke of feeling untethered, unable to make sense of how life could change so dramatically in a moment. Her body reflected this shock, her breathing was shallow, her posture collapsed, and she often held her chest tightly, describing a heavy, aching pressure that would not lift.

Therapy began with stabilisation and creating a safe container for her grief. We focused on supporting her nervous system, using grounding techniques and gentle somatic tracking to help her reconnect with her body in small, manageable steps. At first, she found it difficult to stay with sensation for more than a few seconds. Her system would quickly escalate into overwhelm or shut down into numbness. Through Sensorimotor Psychotherapy principles, we took a slow, titrated approach, helping her distinguish between the acute distress of the present moment and the broader shock her body continued to hold.

As she developed greater safety in the therapeutic space, we introduced simple orientation practices, such as looking around the room, feeling her feet on the floor, to help her re-establish a sense of here-and-now presence. She began to notice subtle bodily cues that signalled rising grief or panic, allowing her to respond earlier with self-regulation strategies. Somatic pendulation (moving gently between areas of discomfort and areas of relative ease) became an important tool, allowing her to process emotion without becoming overwhelmed.

Midway through therapy, she reported moments of genuine relief. She could cry without feeling like she was “falling apart,” and she was able to name emotions more clearly, i.e. sadness, anger, fear, longing, rather than feeling swept into an undifferentiated wave of distress. She described reconnecting with small daily rituals she once enjoyed, such as sitting in the garden or making tea in the morning. These moments, though subtle, signalled a growing capacity to experience life with both grief and presence.

In the later stages of therapy, she began to reconnect with a sense of meaning. She reflected on the strengths she had discovered in herself and the ways her partner’s presence continued to influence her life. She learned to recognise grief not as something to “get over,” but as a natural, evolving process that could coexist with healing, resilience, and renewed connection. Using Somatic Psychotherapy and relational attunement, she developed a more balanced and accepting understanding of her grief.

By the conclusion of therapy, she described feeling “more anchored in myself.” While the grief remained, it no longer felt overwhelming or chaotic. She experienced calmer sleep, reduced physical tension, and a growing ability to engage with life again. This case illustrates how Grief Counselling, grounded in somatic and trauma-informed approaches, can help clients move from shock and disorientation toward integration, meaning, and emotional reconnection, honouring both their loss and their capacity to heal.
