A young European woman in her mid-20s sought counselling after relocating to the North West of Western Australia for her first FIFO role in the mining sector. Having recently moved to Australia, she described feeling “completely cut off from everyone and everything familiar.” Although she had taken the position for financial security and a sense of adventure, she soon found the isolation, intense heat, climate, and demanding roster difficult to manage. Living on-site for two weeks at a time, the transition felt overwhelming and abrupt. She experienced bouts of homesickness and often spent evenings alone in her room, scrolling through social media and comparing her life to friends back home, which only deepened her loneliness and regret about the move.
The client presented with symptoms of low mood, anxiety, disrupted sleep, and a noticeable loss of motivation. She found it difficult to connect meaningfully with colleagues, describing the camp environment as “friendly but surface-level,” and feared she was “too different” to fit in. Despite maintaining a cheerful and competent appearance at work, she felt emotionally drained and began questioning whether FIFO life was sustainable for her. Feelings of guilt and shame also surfaced, as others often told her she was lucky to have a secure, well-paying job. These comments left her feeling misunderstood and invalidated.
A trauma-informed and relational approach was used, integrating Somatic Psychotherapy, mindfulness, and cognitive-behavioural strategies. Early sessions focused on helping her identify, name, and validate her emotional experience of isolation and cultural displacement. Psychotherapy techniques were used to address and alleviate the psychological impact of FIFO work, including the effects of disconnection, fatigue, and limited social contact. This understanding helped her normalise her struggles and reframe them as understandable responses to challenging circumstances rather than personal shortcomings.
Therapy also explored her attachment history and the challenges of being separated from her established support network for the first time. Together, we developed practical strategies to strengthen her sense of connection and emotional safety, including joining an on-site wellbeing group, maintaining regular video contact with friends, and creating a grounding routine that incorporated journalling, brief mindfulness practices, and daily exercise. Counselling sessions also addressed her self-critical thinking patterns, guiding her to cultivate self-compassion, realistic expectations, and a more balanced perspective on her adjustment process.
Over several months, she developed greater self-awareness, resilience, and confidence in managing the emotional highs and lows of FIFO life. She reported feeling more centred, less reactive, and increasingly able to reach out for support rather than withdraw. She began forming genuine friendships on-site and used her time back in Perth to engage in meaningful activities such as creative pursuits, social outings, and restorative self-care practices that nurtured both her body and mind.
By the end of therapy, she described feeling “settled within herself” and more capable of maintaining equilibrium between work demands and emotional wellbeing. She learned to view solitude as an opportunity for rest, reflection, and personal growth, rather than as a form of punishment. She also recognised the ongoing importance of maintaining consistent self-care and connection habits as protective factors for her mental health.
This case illustrates how FIFO Counselling can play a vital role in supporting workers experiencing isolation, loneliness, and adjustment difficulties. Through emotional validation, practical coping strategies, and self-compassion practices, counselling helped this young woman transform a period of disconnection into an experience of resilience, self-discovery, and renewed belonging in her FIFO journey.
