This case is related to a man in his early 60s who sought Bioenergetics after experiencing a significant episode of Depression marked by emotional collapse, low vitality, and a sense of profound emptiness. After more than three decades of marriage, his wife unexpectedly announced she wanted a divorce. There was no infidelity, just a firm, sudden declaration that she no longer wished to remain in the relationship. The separation, legal negotiations, and loss of the shared home were deeply destabilising. He described his life as feeling “stripped back,” and although he had always been practical and resilient, he now felt overwhelmed by loneliness, grief, and a heavy depressive fog.

As we explored his history, a recurring relational pattern emerged. He was the middle child in a family where he was neither the focus of concern nor attention. His mother was caring but inconsistent, often emotionally unavailable, leaving him to navigate childhood largely unnoticed. He recalled “being the invisible one”, quiet, compliant, and expected to manage on his own. While his childhood was not traumatic in an overt sense, it lacked sufficient warmth, mirroring, and attuned responsiveness. This contributed to a lifelong tendency to suppress emotions, retreat inward under stress, and avoid taking up space.

This depressive pattern was clearly imprinted in his body. He arrived with a collapsed posture, minimal chest movement, shallow breathing, and very low energy in his legs. His voice was soft, his movements careful, and he described feeling “flat inside,” as though life had lost its colour. His Depression was not only psychological, it was somatic, expressed through diminished charge, restricted breathing, and a sense of energetic downward pull.

Therapy began by addressing this collapse through grounding work. We used simple Bioenergetic exercises that helped awaken his legs, activate his feet, and rebuild energetic charge. These practices supported him between sessions by restoring a sense of stability and containment, helping counter the lethargy and dissociation often associated with Depression.

As trust developed, we began processing the emotions surrounding the end of his marriage, anger, sadness, fear, guilt, and longing. Through structured movement, breathwork, and expressive discharge, these feelings slowly surfaced from beneath the depressive shutdown. After sessions where he allowed himself to express anger or grief, his energy lifted noticeably. This release naturally led to deeper work around his early attachment wounds. In guided enactments, he contacted the sorrow of not feeling seen or nurtured enough by his mother, which had shaped a lifelong pattern of internal withdrawal. Grieving this brought more energy into the main trunk of his body.

We also worked intensively with his thoracic breathing to restore mobility and vitality in the heart area. As his breath expanded, he began to feel more present, emotionally available, and able to connect with others again.

Over time, his posture lifted, his voice became stronger, and his movements more grounded and assured. He gradually re-engaged socially, took up new interests, and began rebuilding a life that felt meaningful rather than empty.

This case explains how Bioenergetic Analysis can support individuals experiencing Depression by helping them reclaim core aliveness, reorganise collapsed energy patterns, and transform emotional shutdown into renewed engagement. By working directly with the body using a therapy such as Bioenergetics, clients can restore vitality, expand their emotional range, and move forward with greater strength, authenticity, and a deeper sense of possibility.
